Turf War
2003
Print on Paper

The image of former prime minister Winston Churchill, made up into a punk rock icon with a green “turf” of Mohican hair, harks back to the demonstrations in May of 2000 in London, known as the “Turf Wars.”
This monochromatic stencil (usually made from cardboard) with a vibrant layer of grey shows the iconic image of Churchill "rocking" a mohawk, one of the most recognizable elements of contra-culture or punk movement.
By juxtapositioning these iconic elements, Banksy mocks and questions the British establishment and his figures. This screenprint was originally produced by the POW (Pictures On Walls) collective.
